US Embassy protestors to return Jan. 19

A paltry group of about five protestors showed up at the US Embassy today Jan. 16 at noon to show their displeasure at the US Embassy’s recent terror alert.

Ostensibly, they were angry because the warning could have a detrimental effect on Thailand’s lucrative tourism industry.

The embassy is closed today for Martin Luther King Jr. Day though, so after conferring with a representative from the police the protest leader said that they would return Thursday, Jan. 19. Police at the entrance to the US Embassy on Wireless Road far outnumbered the protestors, and journalists did too.

Thailand Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul recently expressed displeasure at the terror warning from the US and other countries. “The matter has affected not only security but also the economy,” he said.

Thai authorities caught one terror suspect, Atris Hussein, at Suvarnabhumi Airport as he tried to leave the country. Another suspect is still reportedly loose somewhere in Thailand, perhaps Bangkok. Israeli media reported that a sketch of the suspect strongly resembles Hezbollah head of worldwide recruitment Naim Haris.

Today in Samut Songkran, near Bangkok, police raided a shophouse full of bomb-making materials believed to belong to Hussein, TANN reported.

Hussein, still in custody with the Thai police, allegedly said that they had called off the terror attack upon being discovered, National Police chief Priewpan Damapong said.
