University suspends professor charged with sexual harrassment

A Somdet Chao Praya Rajabhat University professor has been suspended from teaching after complaints of sexual harassment and rape have been filed against him by his former students.

Some 80 students protested inside the campus yesterday to demand the resignation of Department of Arts Faculty member Krisada Sukhsamnieng. The University Board, for its part, had called for an internal investigation on the matter, but the professor has not reported for work this week.

On Wednesday, four university students filed sexual harassment charges against Prof. Krisada. The students were aged between 19 and 22 and went to the police station with another faculty member. The students wanted the teacher fired from the University as well as imprisoned for his acts of sexual harassment and alleged rape.

The Bangkok Post reported that one of the students claimed Prof. Krisada raped her two years ago. She told police that she was asked to go to the professor’s apartment alone one evening to discuss her studies. He then forced himself on her and threatened her if she ever told anyone. Another complainant claimed that the professor tried to kiss her when they were on a school trip to Chiang Rai last year.

As of press time, Pol Capt Yingnoppawan Phayakphrom, head of the investigation team, said the professor has been called in for questioning.
