UN spurs Thailand to pay closer attention to its water

A representative from the United Nations has advised Thailand to set up an independent water and sanitation monitor, citing the Kingdom’s questionable performance when it comes to water and sewage infrastructure.

UN Special Rapporteur Catarina de Albuquerque, in a statement to the Nation, reported that Thailand’s water and sewer providers remain, to a large extent, unaccountable. De Albuquerque argued that this lack of accountability resulted in many of the Kingdom’s citizens living with sub-standard water and sewage services.

In her report, de Albuquerque cited several nightmarish scenarios that she had observed while in her travels, including a settlement on the outskirts of Bangkok that had waited 10 years in order to obtain access to tap water.

Amongst the ancillary problems created by this lack of water infrastructure is an overabundance of plastic bottles, which de Albuquerque portrayed as an environmental menace in its own right.
