Two severely injured by crane collapse in Din Daeng

Two construction workers sustained serious injuries and another one fell unconscious when a crane malfunctioned and broke down at a construction site near Asoke – Din Daeng intersection in Bangkok on Friday.

The accident also hurled clouds of debris that damaged several houses and a school in the area.

As a result, a male worker severed his right leg while a female worker’s right heel was cut off as well. Another construction worker was found unconscious on the site.

According to initial investigation, the crane was being used by crew from TTS Engineering, who were constructing a 26-story building in the Din Daeng district. The machine was said to have malfunctioned with the top half collapsing and twisting several times before it fell to the ground.

The accident also endangered the lives of motorists passing by on the road. Maengtaek sae Tang, 64, was riding his motorcycle when a 2-meter rod flew out of the construction site and knocked him over. He told the Nation that he’d be dead by now if the rod hit him directly.

According to Din Daeng police, all the victims have been brought to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. At the same time, TTS Engineering’s contractor Songwuth Suwannasirikul and architect-in-charge Sakchai Phalangsuriya have been brought to the station for questioning.

Police said they are looking into the possibility of filing charges against the construction firm and holding them liable for the damages.
