Two drug busts net over one million meth pills

Police this week took over one million ya bah (methamphetamine) pills and 10 kilograms of ya ice (crystal methamphetamine) off the streets in two major drug busts in the Bangkok area.

The largest haul by far was in Samut Prakan province, where police seized one million ya bah pills and 10kg of ya ice (crystal methamphetamine) hidden in a caravan of three vehicles smuggling the drugs from Chiang Mai to Chon Buri, Narcotics Suppression Bureau Chief Chaiwat Chotima said yesterday.

Police arrested five suspects – three men and two women – who told investigators they were paid THB30,000 to deliver the drugs, adding that they had done it twice, the Bangkok Post reported.

The drugs were worth more than THB230 million, Lt. Gen. Chaiwat said.

In Nonthaburi province yesterday, a traffic volunteer noticed two bags near a telephone booth on Kanchanapisek Road, which police later discovered contained 140,000 ya bah pills, MCOT reported.

Police initially called in the bomb squad, fearing the bags contained explosives. However, no such devices were detected.

Inside the bags were 70 packets containing the pills, with a street value of THB30 million.

Nonthaburi provincial police commander Maj. Gen. Thanayut Wutthicharanthamrong said that drug gangs have changed their methods, sometimes hiring people to drop ya bah pills in a specified location where another person picks them up.
