Thailand Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has ordered government agencies to prepare for tropical storm “Gaemi” that is expected to hit Thailand this weekend.
Yingluck said she ordered water to be released from dams upstream from Bangkok and for the Thai capital’s drainage system to be cleaned out. She also said pumps were being installed to help drain water.
Transport Minister Chadchart Sittipunt will oversee traffic in Bangkok and surrounding areas to help relieve gridlock in the event of heavy rain, she said.
The Meteorological Department issued its eighth warning regarding Gaemi, saying that it is expected to hit central Vietnam on Friday and Saturday and Thailand soon thereafter, MCOT reported.
The National Water and Flood Management Policy Offices said yesterday that Isaan, especially Ubon Ratchathani, will be hit by heavy downpours on Friday, the Bangkok Post reported.
The storm will then move across lower northeastern and easter provinces before pounding Bangkok and the central provinces with rain on Sunday and Monday.
