Transport Minister says Thais support THB2.2 trillion mega-projects

Transport Minister Chadchart Sittipunt is making some ambitious claims about Thailand’s popular support for the Transport Ministry’s THB2.2 trillion “mega-project” bundle.

Though Chadchart claims that 91% of Thais support these initiatives, his assertion loses some of its luster when considered in light of the fact that he’s basing it on a survey presented to visitors at the “Thailand 2020” exhibition – essentially a walk-in advertisement for the mega-project bundle.

Democrats (apparently part of the dissenting 9%), have insisted that the project is too expensive and will put undue burden on the national debt.

According to the National News Bureau of Thailand, if approved, the THB2.2 trillion package will be used to construct high-speed rail lines, various infrastructure initiatives and the Dawei seaport off the coast of Myanmar.
