Top Japanese Yakuza boss arrested in Bangkok guesthouse

Thai immigration police arrested a key member of one of Japan’s biggest Yakuza mafia networks in a Bangkok guesthouse yesterday.

Japanese citizen Ushio Sugawara was arrested by Thai police after a tip-off by the Japanese Embassy, the AP reported. He is accused of embezzling 130 million yen (USD1.6 million) with three other gang members from a Japanese company.

Pol. Col. Chartchai Ieamsaeng said that Sugawara is a member or the Sixth Yamaguchi-gumi, one of the largest Japanese mafia organizations.

He says Sugawara fled to Thailand eight months ago and will be deported to Japan.
