Report says Thais read an average of five books per year

According to a report by the Nation, a declining number of children (and a very small number of adults) are taking advantage of the more than 100 libraries in Bangkok’s library system.

In addition to a variety of anecdotal evidence showing how schoolchildren have gradually curtailed their library visits, the report also has some interesting statistics about Thailand’s reading public.

Apparently, the average Thai reads five books per year (compared to 40 in Malaysia, 45 in Singapore and 60 in Vietnam), and only 54% of the adult Thai population reads any books at all.
