According to a report from the Anti-Corruption Organization of Thailand (ACT), the Kingdom is hemorrhaging THB193 billion (USD6.42 billion) per year thanks to corruption and other illicit activities.
Thawatchai Yongkittikul, a representative of ACT, said in an interview with the Nation that most of the income outflow resulted from corruption, the drug trade, tax evasion and graft.
ACT is basing its figures on research conducted by Washington-based think tank Global Financial Integrity (GFI), which last month issued a report on “Illicit Financial Flows from Developing Countries: 2001 – 2010,” from which the corruption statistics were drawn.
Coconuts put that report on blast when it came out last month, but now, as then, the info is well worth the attention.
