The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) – an inter-governmental body that monitors money laundering and terrorism funding – has agreed to take Thailand off of its “black list” for countries that consistently pass dirty money.
MCOT reports that Sihanart Prayoonrat, secretary general of the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO), met with FATF representatives earlier this month and made a convincing case for Thailand having cleaned up its monetary act.
The FATF is currently investigating whether or not Thailand’s claims hold water, but if they do, the Kingdom will be removed from the “black list” during the FATF’s June meeting.
Among Thailand’s anti-money laundering initiatives have been legislation aimed at criminalizing terrorist financing and legislation meant to freeze the assets of terrorists doing business within the country.
