Thailand reclaims rice-exporting crown

Thailand is back on top baby, at least in terms of overall rice exports.

The Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE) is claiming that Thailand is expected to export more rice this year than any other country in the world, a title for which the country can thank a healthy, year-on-year increase in output.

The Bangkok Post is reporting that this year’s harvest is expected to yield 12.6% more rice than last year, though the forces behind that shift have to do as much with government chicanery as with propitious weather.

Last October, the government started buying rice at above market prices, which in turn spurred farmers to plant more rice than they otherwise would have.

But hey, who cares about the economic devices, the important thing is that we’re number one.
