The Nation got all gynecological today in an article examining flood-related physical ailments specific to females.
The result was both informative and frightening.
Apparently the flooding has doubled hospital admissions for vagina-related problems, according to Siriraj Hospital obstetrician and gynecologist Saifon Chawanpaiboon.
“If you can’t avoid being in the contaminated floodwater, you have to be extremely careful with the delicate parts of the body, especially the vagina,” said Dr Saifon. “Women who have had sexual relations or children have a more open vaginal canal, so they face a greater risk of infection, and could even be penetrated by leeches or insects.”
Pregnant women face the highest risks as as contamination can easily be passed to the embryo leading to premature birth, disabilities, and even stillbirth. Women who are menstruating are also at a high risk because their cervixes are wider.
If women must wade in floodwater they should wear plastic pants and panty liners, changing the latter every two to three hours. Proper drying of all sensitive areas after coming into contact with floodwaters is also crucial.
Luckily, Thai lingerie company Sabina has launched a “Bye Bye Flood” sale on their panties made of “more hygienic material” and posted tips on their website about how to keep healthy.
“To promote better care during the flooding, Sabina is offering a list of easy steps to prevent disease,” Sabina’s Kannika Buasap told the Nation. “We have advice on how to choose the right panties and take care of them, and the ladies can be fully confident in everything they do thanks to our hygienic products.”
