Thailand Fine Arts Department seeks funds to repair Wat Arun

Thailand’s Fine Arts Department is seeking THB169.7 million to repair Wat Arun, Bangkok’s famous “Temple of the Dawn” on the banks of the Chao Phraya River.

Tharapong Srisuchart, head of the Archaeology Office, said that THB130 million was needed for the restoration of the Wat Arun’s large stupas, the tower-like structures that are the hallmark of the temple.

Another THB39.7 million will be needed to fix two very banged-up smaller stupas and two pyramid-roofed square halls, the Nation reported.

The Culture Minister will seek the funds from Cabinet.

Fine Arts Department officials plan to check the stability of the temple’s foundations, create a 3D survey, and install a seismograph before work begins on the restoration.

Wat Arun is called the “Temple of the Dawn” because the first morning light reflects off its stupas, giving it an iridescent glow.
