Thai students will have to wait for free tablets

According to Deputy Education Minister Sermsak Pongpanich, a second batch of tablet computers due to be released to Thai students in grades one and seven have been delayed for an unspecified number of months.

The plan was originally to distribute the 1.8 million tablets by March 16, but a variety of bureaucratic hurdles have made that release date an impossibility.

In addition to requiring the cooperation of nine different educational ministries, the plan to distribute tablets requires the Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) to organize an auction for procurement of the devices, according to the Bangkok Post.

At present, the auction is tentatively planned for April 25. An updated release date for the tablet distribution has not been set.
