Authorities have arrested a Thai police officer who was caught trying to smuggle 20 elephant tusks through the southern province of Chumphon this weekend.
The suspect was transporting the tusks in a police van, though he himself was dressed as a civilian.
Though the offending officer, whose name was not released to the press, has admitted to his crime, the source of the ivory remains unclear.
In conversation with the Bangkok Post, wildlife conservation group Freeland added that the ivory was most likely acquired through poaching.
