Thai government fears 100K people could get dengue fever this year

In a message sure to set hypochondriacs’ hearts aflutter, the Thai government has announced that this year’s cases of dengue fever have dwarfed the previous year’s and that if this trend continues, as many as 100,000 people could contract the disease.

Via a statement released by the National News Bureau of Thailand, the Department of Disease Control stated that 5,000 people had acquired the disease thus far this year, a five-times increase from winter 2012.

In response to this proliferation, the Ministry of Public Health has set up a dengue fever “war room,” meant to help prevent the disease’s spread.
