Taxi driver, musician team up to catch mobile phone thieves

This weekend, a taxi driver and a musician took on the temporary role of vigilantes, helping to catch a pair of mobile phone thieves in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The incident began when a city taxi driver (who wished to remain anonymous), saw a pair of motorcycle-bound thieves steal a cell phone from a pedestrian on Lad Phrao Soi 48.

After witnessing the theft, the taxi driver gave chase, pursuing the two thieves until he was able to get in front of them and cut them off.

At this point, another motorist, 29-year-old professional bassist Chaowara Janthong, stopped to help with the thieves’ apprehension.

In the ensuing scuffle, one of the thieves was detained, while the other escaped, only to be tracked down later at his house.

According to the Bangkok Post, Chaowara received a broken knee for his efforts. He was hospitalized with this injury, but a THB10,000 reward from the police should help take care of his medical bills.
