On Wednesday, a woman whose bank account had been credited with THB490,000 from a Furby scam turned herself in to police, claiming (curiously enough) that she herself was a victim of that selfsame scam.
Kanjana Jabang, 24, told police that the money that had been transferred into her account originated from a scam perpetrated by another woman – Chonnikan Taichilasasoontorn – who had been using a 16-year-old girl as a front for a fake Furby enterprise of epic proportions.
Apparently Chonnikan had posted advertisements online for Furbys, selling them at below market prices. She used a 16-year-old’s name as a front for the operation for reasons that remain unclear.
Kanjana claimed that she originally thought the nearly half-million baht payment from Chonnikan was meant to cover an outstanding debt between the two, but later came to believe that it actually stemmed from the latter’s ill-gotten-gains.
The Bangkok Post reports that Chonnikan was arrested for peddling the fake dolls, but was later released on bail, meaning that this most convoluted of knockoff Furby narratives has yet to come to an end.
