A survey conducted by the Center for Alcohol Studies (CAS) has revealed that while Thai adults have curtailed their drinking during the past decade, Thai teens have increased their consumption, leaving the efforts of anti-alcohol groups (such as the CAS) at something of an impasse.
According to the CAS survey, while 2.6 million adults have given up alcohol during the past decade, the average Thai teenager has increased his or her consumption to 7.1 liters per person per year.
The most rampant consumption of alcohol is taking place in the North and Northeast of the country, where heavy marketing by alcohol brands has resulted in massive alcohol consumption among low-income Thais.
By contrast, the lowest rates of alcohol consumption reside in Thailand’s south, where a heavily Muslim population serves to drive down the number of drinkers.
