Sukhumbhand shifts to ‘seven pillar’ campaign strategy

Democrat candidate MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra’s campaign for governor has shifted its principle strategy, adopting a “seven pillars” policy aimed at increasing the quality of life for Bangkokians.

From now on, Sukhumbhand’s campaign will focus on these seven areas of policy: the environment, healthcare, children’s education and health, traffic and transport, safety and security, natural disasters, and preparations for the launch of the ASEAN Economic Community.

In its coverage of the shift, the Bangkok Post strongly implied that this campaign was adopted in response to Sukhumbhand’s flagging poll numbers.

The Post pointed out that the latest Abac poll showed Sukhumbhand trailing his closest rival, the Pheu Thai Party’s Pongsapat Pongcharoen, by a solid 10 percentage points. However, surveys conducted by Bangkok Poll and Nida Poll describe a much closer race, showing a spread of only a couple percentage points between the two candidates.
