‘Seven Dangerous Days’: 365 killed on roads of Thailand

The number of people killed on Thailand’s roads during the “Seven Dangerous Days” around New Year rose 8% this year as 365 died.

The number of accidents also increased by 2.68% this year.

Deputy Interior Minister Chatt Kuldiloke said yesterday that 68,314 police maned 2,350 checkpoints throughout Thailand during the period to try to keep roads safer. Over 4.7 million vehicles were flagged down and 688,381 people cited for breaking traffic laws.

Statistics showed the nearly 25% of deaths were due to motorcyclists not wearing helmets – other major causes included speeding and drunk driving. Nakhon Pathom had the most fatalities during the “Seven Dangerous Days” with 18, while Chiang Mai had the most injuries with 147, the Nation reported.

Every year the Thai government designates Dec. 27 to Jan. 2 as “Seven Dangerous Days” on Thailand’s roads to raise safety awareness during the busy time.
