Samut Prakan clinic busted for selling sedative Dormicum to teenagers

Police in Samut Prakan raided a pharmacy clinic on Jan. 25, that was suspected of selling the prescription sedative Dormicum to numerous teenagers.

Sumut Prakan police received a tip from the parent of a 17-year-old who said that the Seree Clinic was selling the drug to teenagers, Thai Rath reported. They raided the clinic at 7pm and found 46-year-old owner Mr. Seree Sirised and his assistant, 25-year-old Miss Pikul Aad-dilang.

They confiscated a pack of 5 Dormicum pills and cash that the assistant admitted was from the sale of the drug. Police also found other sedatives in the front counter drawer and diagnosis room of the clinic.

The primary investigation showed that the clinic was selling Dormicum illegally, so both people were arrested for further investigation.

Dormicum (midazolam) is in the benzodizepine drug class, so it’s similar to Xanax or Valium. According to Wikipedia, the drug is used for treatment of acute seizures, moderate to severe insomnia, and for inducing sedation and amnesia before medical procedures. It possesses profoundly potent anxiolytic, amnestic, hypnotic, antic, skeletal muscle relaxant, and sedative properties.

A specialist pharmacist, Mr. Jirapat Play-ngam told Thai Rath that Dormicum can make a patient feel woozy and fall asleep suddenly.

The clinic owner is facing jail time of up to 5-10 years and will be charged fine of THB100, 000 – 400,000 for selling the drug illegally under the Psychotropic Substances Act of Thai law in 1975 and the Clinic Act of Thai law in 1998, Section 34 (1) and Section 35(3).
