Sai Mai district is metropolitan Bangkok’s last barrier in defense of flooding.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Authority is building up flood barriers in the district, which borders the already flooded Pathum Thani province, according to the Bangkok Post. If floodwaters break the barriers in Sai Mai, the next areas at risk would be Don Muang, Bang Khen, Bang Kapi and Min Buri.
Thailand’s oldest industrial estate, Nava Nakorn in Pathum Thani, was 100 per cent flooded by yesterday Oct. 18, leading to a mass evacuation of employees and residents.
The BMA is leading an effort by officials and volunteers to construct stronger dykes on the Khlong Hok Wa canal in Sai Mai. Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra called for 2 million more sandbags for the dyke within 48 hours yesterday.
“We need to make the barrier wider and stronger. That is our objective today. Bangkok is my home. I’m the housekeeper for the whole of Bangkok, so I cannot allow flooding in any part of the city without trying to stop it,” the ever-quotable MR Sukhumbhand said.
Meanwhile, 30 Thai Air Force aircraft were moved from Don Muang Airport to U-Tapao Naval Base in Chonburi, Wing 41 in Chiang Mai, and Wing 1 in Nakhon Ratchasima yesterday, the Nation reported. Ten aircraft remain at Don Muang if needed for rescue and recovery missions, but are ready to move at three hours notice.
