Romanian nabbed for ATM fraud on Sukhumvit

Romanian citizen Lozinca George Alexandru, 22, was arrested recently on Bangkok’s Sukhumvit Soi 7 for hacking into European bank databases and making withdrawals from ATMs in Thailand.

Tourist police paraded the suspect in front of the press yesterday Dec. 8 together with THB6,000, 655 fake ATM cars, a magnetic reader/recorder, and a notebook computer.

Siam Commercial Bank fraud officers tipped off the police about the crimes, the Nation reported.

Police identified Alexandru from an ATM security camera, found him making a withdrawal on Soi 7, and then followed him to his apartment where they found a stash of fake ATM cards. He reportedly told police that he had entered Thailand with two other Romanians on October 19 and that they withdrew about THB50 million in cash and sent the money to a gang leader in Romania after taking a 10 percent cut.

Police are looking for the other two Romanian suspects.
