Don Mueang Airport’s restrooms have undergone a major makeover.
The much-criticized and embattled Don Mueang airport resumed full-scale operations earlier this week, also unveiling spanking new 110-square-meter showcase bathrooms at a cost of TBH15 million.
Whether that money might have been better used is another question… but turns out the Airports of Thailand authority didn’t pay for them anyways!
The high-end rest rooms were built by Siam Cement Group; but they did not charge the Airports of Thailand Plc (AOT) a single baht. The only condition was that the airport authority maintain the restrooms for three years at an estimated cost of around TBH6 million. According to Paranee Vatanotai, the airport’s general manager, the two showcase restrooms were built to serve departing international and domestic passengers at Don Mueang.
The two new bathrooms are equipped with sensor-controlled doors, gleaming fixtures, sanitary wares and bin lids. An interactive and high-end wall screen was also placed at the entrance to entertain guests waiting for their friends of loved ones who are using the restrooms.
The Bangkok Post reported that SCG initially proposed this restroom renovation plan to Suvarnabhumi airport. However the airports authority pointed them to Don Mueang instead because the smaller airport was more ideal to be renovated. SCG, for its part, said it will be building seven showcase rest rooms at the departure zone of Suvarnabhumi airport by February next year. They will be a lot smaller though, covering only 50 to 70 square meters due to smaller floor areas at Suvarnabhumi.
