Local residents from still-inundated Don Mueang and Nonthaburi gathered yesterday Nov. 20, calling for the government to drain floodwater out of their communities faster.
More than 200 people from Sai Noi, Bang Kruai, and Bang Bua Thong districts of Nonthaburi blocked part of Rattanathibet Road in front of the provincial hall, the Bangkok Post reported.
The crowd demanded that the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority open the sluice gates at Khlong Maha Sawat, Khlong Thawi Watthana, Khlong Phasicharoen, Khlong Bang-or and Khlong Bang Bamru, which connect to wester Bangkok.
The protestors also asked for the repair of dykes in Bang Bua Thong to stop more water from flowing into their areas, and pumps to help remove water.
They also asked for special compensation, as they said their districts had been kept flooded to spare central Bangkok and said they would destroy dykes that are keeping water in their areas if the demands weren’t met.
Another group of about 200 from Bangkok Don Mueang and Laksi districts and Pathum Thani’s Mueang Ake housing estate protested yesterday to demand the opening of the Khlong Bang Khen sluice gate at Wat Thewa Sunthorn in Bang Khen district to drain floodwater from the areas.
