Proposed legislation would force manufacturers to reveal pollution stats

Two environmental organizations are currently in the process of drafting legislation that, if adopted, would force Thai manufacturers to reveal information about pollutants expelled by their businesses.

Ecological Alert and Recovery Thailand (Earth) and Environmental Litigation and Advocacy for the Wants (EnLAW) are at work on a bill that would compel industrial powers to inform the public of the pollutants they release into the environment. Included in the bill’s provisions would also be language aimed at punishing major polluters.

The Bangkok Post reports that if passed into law, the bill would subject major polluters to fines and prison terms.

Pollution has gained front-and-center attention throughout Thailand in the recent past, thanks to the murder of environmental activist Prajob Nao-opas, who was shot last week in his native Phanom Sarakham district.
