Prawet grandmother confesses to killing 13-year-old grandson

A grandmother in Bangkok’s Prawet district confessed this week to accidentally killing her 13-year-old grandson by hitting him on the head while he was sleeping.

The boy’s body was found in a fire escape at the Yongcharoen Complex building D, the Nation reported.

Bangkok police chief Pol Major-General Khamronwit Thoopkra-chang said that Somjit Jampadee, 55, confessed to striking and unintentionally killing her grandson after they had an argument. Somjit said that her grandson, who she had raised since his father died when he was two years old, was often abusive and shoved and punched her. On the day of the killing, she said that the boy asked her for THB500 and when she refused threatened her with a knife.

The police chief said evidence against Somjit included blood traces, security camera footage and the blanket used in disposing the body.

Remarkably, this is not the first time that Somjit has had a run in with the law for killing a family member. In 1993, she shot and killed her husband but was found not-guilty of murder because the man was found to have assaulted her, Pol. Maj. Gen. Khamronwit said.

Police presented Somjit to Phra Kanong Court yesterday, where she was denied bail because of flight risk.

Somjit said that she had only meant to teach her grandson a lesson and was sorry that he was dead.
