PR Nightmare: Shower gel event nearly causes stampede at Victory Monument

The launch event of Snake Brand’s shower gel was abruptly cancelled yesterday after it almost caused a stampede on the flyover near the entrance of BTS Victory Monument stop.

Big Step Event, the organizer of Snake Brand Fresh Festival 2013, made a statement on their Facebook page apologizing to Snake Brand, “brand ambassador” actor Pakorn “Boy” Chatborirak, and Victory Monument passersby. The company built a temporary shower room at the spot and had Pakorn enjoying the refreshing experience as a gimmick for the personal hygiene product.

The response from Pakorn’s fans was so overwhelming that the crowd blocked the walkway and prevented commuters from taking transit at Victory Monument, one of Bangkok’s biggest bus terminals. Pakorn was singing Singto Numchok’s hit single “Yoo Dtor Loey Dai Mai” (Can You Stay?) when some travelers, who apparently disagreed with the lyrics, stepped up on the stage and scolded him for causing such trouble.

The clip below demonstrates how a marketing campaign can turn into a PR nightmare.
