Following his high-profile defeat in this Sunday’s gubernatorial election, Pol Gen Pongsapat Pongcharoen is returning to his original calling – police work.
Pongsapat had originally resigned from the force in order to seek the governor’s office, but now that the race has concluded, he is stating that he will ask Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra for a reinstatement.
Previous to the governor’s race, Pongsapat held the positions of deputy police chief and secretary-general of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB).
In a statement to the Bangkok Post, police spokesman Pol Maj-Gen Piya Uthayo said that the constitution allows for Pongsapat to request a return to his previous position, provided he applies to do so within 30 days of the election result.
