Earlier today, Pol Gen Pongsapat Pongcharoen submitted his resignation letter to the Office of Narcotics Control Board, relinquishing his position as the Board’s secretary-general. The move was undertaken in order to ensure that he could compete in the Bangkok governor’s race after securing the nomination of the Pheu Thai Party last Sunday.
At the Narcotic Control Board’s office on Din Daeng Road, Pongsapat, a deputy police chief, met with local people who came to bid their last goodbyes. Some even offered him handfuls of red roses. He said that even though he had quit, he would always be a proponent of the fight against drugs.
Dailynews reported that his resignation would take effect today. To woo voters, Pongsapat highlighted his ability to smoothly cooperate with the ruling Pheu Thai Party as a major strength. He has also started an online campaign to connect with Twitter and Facebook users in Bangkok.
The governor’s election is scheduled for Mar. 3.
