Earlier today, the Nation reported on the results of a survey conducted by Abac Poll that suggests an overwhelming majority of Thai people approve of bribery.
Of the poll’s 1,561 respondents, 80% claimed to have bribed an official in return for special treatment. When asked if offering gifts to state procuring committees in an effort to curry favor was something they viewed as admissible, 87.5% responded, “Yes.”
The poll also asked state workers if they had used working time to conduct personal business, to which 81% responded that they had.
Interesting results, to be sure, but after last month’s gubernatorial debacle, we feel obligated to suggest that you take these numbers with a grain of salt.
