A Thonglor traffic police officer was injured on Wednesday while trying to stop a suspected motorcycle street racer near the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center.
According to the Bangkok Post, 41-year-old Pol Sen Sgt Maj Kowit Saengkaew suffered a broken right arm, bruised head and a dislocated shoulder after being run over by a speeding motorcycle. The traffic cop tried to flag down a suspect named Pichitchai Ketkao, 25, and a 17-year-old girl whose name was withheld, at a checkpoint on Ratchadapisek Road at around 1 am.
However, instead of slowing down, the riders turned off their head lights and sped up to hit the policeman. The two suspected sustained minor injuries and were also brought to the Police General Hospital.
Bangkok police are coming down hard on illegal street racers. In the early hours of Wednesday, 27 street racers were arrested and 23 motorbikes used for illegal street racing were seized by police. The operations were conducted on Deang, Sutthisarn and Vibhavadi roads.
Police said eight of the arrested bikers were minors.
Vibhavadi police station chief Pol Lt Colonel Sanong Saengmanee said they have received information that motorcycle racers gathered in the area on October 23.
