Police entrance exam cheaters arrested, investigation continues

Police have arrested 43 out of 49 people wanted for allegedly cheating on the police entrance exam, Police spokesman Maj. Gen. Piya Uthayo announced yesterday.

The suspects will be charged with public fraud culminating in asset seizure according to the Anti-Money Laundering Law, violating the Radio Communications Act by using transmitting devices to cheat and forging state issued documents, The Nation reported

Results for the entrance exam to the non-commissioned officer school were declared invalid when evidence of cheating was discovered earlier this month.

Police believe that a gang – with possible inside connections – operated around the country, offering their cheating service to candidates at a cost of THB350,000 each, the Bangkok Post reported.

The cheating police hopefuls carried shortwave radios that were modified to receive vibrations indicating correct answers to multiple choice questions, police said, adding that transmissions had to be done within a 300-yard (meter) radius of the test-taking venues.

A new exam will be held in August on various dates and at various locations, whereas in the past they were held in the same venue on the same date, Maj. Gen. Piya said. This time around, the test will be more difficult, and those caught cheating this month will be ineligible to retake it.

The investigation into the scandal is ongoing.
