Police have announced the arrest of two men for shooting an elephant in Thailand’s Kaent Krachan National Park.
On Friday, police found the carcass of a female elephant near a creek in the park. They engaged a search for the elephant’s killers and eventually happened upon Jopai Wena and Wirat Wena, who were arrested in an area near the carcass.
Both men denied all accusations of poaching, but police nonetheless believe that they killed the female elephant in an effort to steal her calf.
The Bangkok Post reports that officers from the National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department’s wildlife conservation division are also tracking a wounded, male elephant whom they believe was attacked by the same group of poachers.
