A Royal Thai Police Office (RTPO) board chaired by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has unanimously chosen Gen. Adul Saengsingkaew to take over as national police chief when Gen. Priewpan Damapong retires on September 30, MCOT reported.
The most senior candidate for the position was Gen. Pansiri Prapawat, deputy police chief in charge of crime suppression and prevention policies, was overlooked and is due to retire next year, the Bangkok Post reported.
Gen. Adul currently oversees the RTPO’s security affairs and is acting secretary-general of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board. He has also been praised for his handling of unrest in Thailand’s Deep South border provinces, the Post reported.
Gen. Priewpan has expressed hope that his successor will continue illicit drug suppression activities.
