Pineapple Non-express: Farmers to block southern highway

Thousands of pineapple farmers in Prachuap Khiri Khan plan on totally blocking the Phetkasem Highway linking Bangkok with southern Thailand starting tomorrow March 30.

About 7,800 of the farmers say they will block the vital highway until the government agrees to allocate THB800 million to buy their extra pineapples at THB4 baht per kilogram. Bulk pineapple dealers and canned pineapple factories recently announced that they would stop buying the fruit from the Prachuap Khiri Khan farmers, leaving them in the lurch.

Thai Pineapple Farmers’ Association president Surat Munitarawong said the pineapple farmers in Prachuap Khiri Khan would be joined by those from Uthai Thani, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi and Phetchaburi, The Phuket Gazette reported.

They plan to block the four lanes of Phetkasem Highway at Ban Nong Hin Intersection in Tambon So Khlong Wan.

So if you were planning on driving anywhere south of Hua Hin this weekend, the time to leave is NOW.
