The Chao Phraya River may overrun this weekend as extremely high sea tides are forecast for Oct. 27-31. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra warned that riverside areas of Bangkok are most at risk for flooding right now, as the river may overrun embankments.
Bangkok Governor M.R. Sukhumbhand Paribatra said yesterday Oct. 25 that if the Chao Phraya continues to rise at its current pace it will be 2.6 meters high and surge over the 2.5 meter flood barriers. Governor Sukhumbhand said that the river achieved record highs yesterday.
Right now all anyone can do is be prepared as possible and wait vigilantly.
This morning life continued as normally as possible below Saphan Taksin BTS station, despite the controlled overflow streaming out onto the street and some areas being flooded. Homeless men slept on benches as the runoff flowed under them and a young boy reeled in a large catfish at the pier – at least one small benefit of such a humongous volume of water.
