Photo of monks buying cosmetics reignites debate on homosexuality

A photo of two monks buying cosmetics at a beauty counter in a famous shopping mall in the Pinklao area has surfaced online, attracting numerous criticisms from Thai internet commentators.

The photo has added to a string of incidents in which monks have been caught displaying an explicitly homosexual demeanor. In Thailand, the supreme governing body of the Thai monk community set a rule in 1989, prohibiting gay men from being ordained as monks.

Amnaj Buasiri, Director of the Secretariat of the Sangha Association of Thailand, told INN that he had not yet received a report about the incident. He assigned blame to the novice monks, saying that they were responsible for most of the inappropriate behavior, especially when they were within their own groups.
