Pheu Thai strategists believe turnout will prove key to gubernatorial election

In an interview with the Nation, Pheu Thai campaign strategist Phumtham Wechayachai claimed that Pheu Thai gubernatorial candidate Pongsapat Pongcharoen’s victory in Sunday’s election hinged foremost on voter turnout.

“Today, we believe we have a good chance [of winning the election],” Phumtham said. “People came out of their shop houses to wave to [Prime Minister] Yingluck [Shinawatra] and Pongsapat. People driving all kinds of cars, from Mercedes to ordinary sedans, blew their horns and waved to greet us.”

Phumthan implied that Pongsapat had the election all but wrapped up and that an apathetic voting populace was now the only factor that could upset his potential victory.
