Parts of Bangkok could be flooded for up to two weeks after Tropical Storm Gaemi

Eleven flood-prone areas of Bangkok could be inundated by 30cm of flood water for up to two weeks in the wake of heavy storms this month, a Chulalongkorn water expert told a seminar crowd in Bangkok yesterday.

Tropical Storm Gaemi is expected to lash Thailand with heavy rain this weekend.

The 11 Bangkok areas most at risk are: Lat Phrao, Min Buri, Phra Khanong, Bang Kae, along Khlong Prawet, Khlong Sam Wa, Khlong Song Wa, Khlong Phraya Ratchamontri, Khlong Phittayalongkorn, Khlong Thawi Wattana, and the area to the east of Suvarnabhumi airport, the Bangkok Post reported.

Chulalongkorn University water resources engineering expert Sucharit Koontanakulvong said that two more storms after Gaemi will further soak Thailand, the Nation reported.

“The resulting torrential rain will increase the volume of water in the North and Central regions, prompting floods in Bangkok,” he said. “Widespread flooding for longer periods in Bangkok is not beyond expectation if it cannot be drained in the first hour.”
