Official with Feb. 30 birthdate resigns

The 53-year drama of Sangwien Khuncharoen came to an unfortunate conclusion with the Aranyaprathet official’s resignation yesterday.

For those new to this story, Sangwien has been under fire all week for a grand, clerical error: since his 1960 birth, Sangwien’s birthdate has been officially registered as Feb. 30. That date showed up on his official ID card and home registration.

Fans of calendars and/or counting will have noticed that the date of Feb. 30 does not actually exist. Not now, not ever.

During the past week, Thai officials have wised up to this news as well.

Interior Minister Jarupong Ruangsuwan had some particularly heated words for Sangwien (as reported in the Bangkok Post) and yesterday, Viroj Aksorndee, senior deputy chief of Aranyaprathet district, announced Sangwien’s timely retirement.

This whole incident offers further evidence that February is absolutely, indisputably the worst month.
