Flood-hit residents of Bang Yai district in Nonthaburi blocked part of Kanchanaphisek Road on Sunday Jan. 8, calling for the government to speed up relief payments.
Nonthaburi was one of the areas most affected by the Great Thailand Floods of 2011 and only fully dried out in December.
The government has committed to pay THB5,000 to each affected household but the protesters in Nonthaburi said the payments were too slow.
About 100 people blocked the outbound lanes of Kanchanaphisek Road at the entrance of Soi Kanthana in Bang Yai district, the Bangkok Post reported, causing major traffic.
Pol Lt Col Thannaphan Chalermpatcharapornkul, inspector at Bang Yai police station, said that the protesters were complaining that they hadn’t received checks.
The protest lasted several hours and ended only after local authorities said they would consider their demand for speedier payment.
