Two police screening panels yesterday concluded that acting police chief Khamronwit Thoopkrachang should be appointed Bangkok’s new police chief, reports said.
Maj Gen Khamronwit was promoted to acting Metropolitan Police Bureau chief after the sudden transfer on June 1 of then chief Winai Thongsong to an inactive post. There has been speculation the transfer of Lt Gen Winai was ordered by exiled former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra for the police’s handling of People’s Alliance for Democracy protests last month, the Bangkok Post reported.
The two panels took 15 and five minutes respectively to endorse the proposal submitted by national police chief Priewpan Damapong. The panels also approved the appointment of Lt. Gen. Winai as Provincial Police Region 1 commissioner and deputy city police Maj Gen Wichai Sangprapai as deputy police inspector-general.
The decisions will be forwarded to the Police Commission for approval, the report said.
