NASA pics show Bangkok surrounded by water

An image taken by a NASA satellite on Nov. 1, 2011 has revealed the extent of the floodwater that still surrounds Bangkok. NASA has also provided an image taken of the same area from almost exactly three years ago on Nov. 12, 2008.

Billions of cubic meter still sit above Bangkok, slowly seeping southward to the Gulf of Thailand. And the Thai capital sits at the biggest drainage point out to the ocean, the mouth of the Chao Phraya River.

Will central Bangkok flood? These images sure suggest that it will.

The technology used to take these shots involves a little thing called the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), which uses visible and infrared light to differentiate between water and land.
