About 200 Thai Muslims protested against a school’s headscarf ban in front of Parliament in Bangkok yesterday Jan. 10.
The protestors, from the Muslim Group for Peace, submitted a letter to Prime Minster Yingluck Shinawatra asking that she look into a ban on headscarves (or hijabs) at Wat Nong Chok School in Bangkok’s Nong Chok district, The Bangkok Post reported. In addition to the letter, they submitted an official statement criticizing the school for un-equal treatment and violating the rights of Muslim students.
In response to the rally, Education Minister Woravat Aupinyakul said that muslim students were not breaking the school dress code by wearing hijabs, The Nation reported. He spoke with the protestors for 30 minutes and promised to discuss the issue with the school.
