MRT fares increase Oct. 3

Bangkok Metro Public Company Limited (BMCL), operator of the MRT subway, is planning to impose a fare hike this October after three months of postponement.

BMCL Marketing Senior Vice President Wisut Boriboon announced that the company is now ready to increase its original fares of 15-40 baht per trip to 16-40 baht. The new rate will come into effect on October 3 for both top-up cards and tokens.

Mr. Wisut said BMCL was previously scheduled to raise the fares on July 3, 2012, in compliance with the contract but decided to keep the prices unchanged for three more months to help passengers cope with their soaring expenses. The 3-month extension will come to an end this October 2.
