Ministry of Public Health: Drinking and swimming is a bad idea

The Ministry of Public Health has warned the public against consuming alcohol while swimming in the rising floodwaters.

Dr. Surawit Khonsomboon, Deputy Minister of Public Health stressed that swimming while intoxicated can lead to drowning, NNT reported.

The health official explained that alcohol expands the body’s blood vessels, causing it to lose heat. The body’s temperature eventually drops. He added that if a person is drunk and goes in the water this could lead to leg cramps or in the worst case scenario, a body shutdown.

Dr. Surawit warned citizens not to drink near waterways or go for a dip in the floodwaters.

At the same time, the health ministry has also evacuated flood victims with health problems and brought them to the nearest hospitals. Emergency workers have already relocated 30 people in Kabin Buri. They are also extending assistance to other victims at the Chachoengsao and Nakhon Nayok provinces.

The public is reminded to call the emergency line 1669 for assistance.
