Low-cost airlines to move to Don Mueang by August 1

Low-cost carriers are to begin operating out of Don Mueang Airport on August 1, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Kittiratt Na Ranong announced to day after a meeting with economic ministers.

Mr. Kittiratt’s announcement came following a meeting at Government House today to discuss the impact of the Euro-zone crisis’ impact on the Thai economy.

Earlier this month, the Cabinet approved a plan to fully reactivate the aging Don Mueang facility to ease congestion on Suvarnabhumi airport – Thailand’s largest. As part of the plan, low-cost carriers such as AirAsia, Nok Air and others would relocate and operate out of Don Mueang.

Mr. Kittiratt said today that the reactivation on August 1 is sooner than expected, although he did not indicate whether all of the airlines scheduled to relocate will be operational from Don Mueang on that date.
